Objective: to explore and reflect upon personal and religious attitudes to wealth.

Key Questions: Does justice/fairness for me get in the way of justice/fairness for others? What do believers mean by justice and fairness? What should we stand for? Why should we follow rules? Who/what should make ‘the’ rules?

By the end of this module:

All learners will: Be able to say what their own attitude to money is; Be able to describe the key elements of the Muslim practice of Zakah; Be able to retell the story of Guru Nanak and Malik Bhago and show some   understanding of its significance; Be able to describe what Christian Aid does; Show some understanding of Fair Trade issues; Be able to say whether they think religious people should be rich or not; Be able to say why and how other people matter.

Most learners will: Be able to express their own opinions and show they value the opinions of others about the use and value of wealth; Be able to explain Muslim practice of Zakah and explain why the Muslim practice of Zakah is important to the Muslim community; Be able to explain the message Guru Nanak was trying to get across during his encounter with Malik Bhago; Be able to explain the motivation behind Christian Aid; Be able to explain why religious people may be involved in the promotion of Fair Trade products; Be able to express a view about the relationship between wealth and religious people; Be able to express an opinion about justice and fairness and what matters to them.

Some learners will also: Be able to explain their own attitude to wealth and how it should be used; Be able to evaluate the Muslim practice of Zakah and it’s impact on society; Be able to relate the story of Guru Nanak and Malik Bhago to how Sikhs might live their lives today; Be able to explain the motivation behind the work of Christian Aid and evaluate their work in the light of Jesus’ teachings and example concerning justice; Be able to explain why religious people may promote Fair trade products; Be able to evaluate the statement “You cannot be religious and rich” and express their own view in a reasoned way, self–critical and reflective way.
